Assignments April 6-9

37. Book Jacket – Due Thursday April 9

Create a book jacket/cover design for one of your favorite books. The book can be in any language and any subject.

A book cover design requires the creation of an appealing graphic – a mini poster so-to-speak – that encourages the consumer to pick up the book and look through it. The cover graphic can set a mood or hint at what the reader might experience inside its covers.

A designer interprets and translates a book into visual ideas.

You will create a conceptual idea based on your original imagery.

Design with consideration and respect of copyright law as it applies to commercial work.

Integrate type and imagery into a cohesive narrative inspired by the content.

Support the clarity of the message, by applying visual principles to both imagery and typography.

Pay attention to compositional skills in your page layout design including typography, grid and image.

Look online at different book covers to see designs.

The book cover will include the front cover, the back cover, and the spine. In Photoshop you will create the image as 8.5 height and then length will be 24. Make sure the resolution is set up at 300. Add in vertical guides to separate out the front cover, spine, and back cover.

Project Guidelines

Include:

Front Cover include title, author, label

Back Cover/Spine include title, author, label, price, barcode

Think about- Color, font choice, image, paragraph

Try to stick with a simple subject so that the way you’ve used balance is obvious to any viewer.

Make sure to emphasize on a main subject/title of your design, edit your images, make sure there is nothing in your pictures that don’t belong there. If it doesn’t contribute to your idea, keep it out.

Make sure to use large images so that there is no pixilation.

Be creative.

Save as a JPEG when you are done and upload to your blog as “Book Cover.”
